What is the difference and which is better?

Freeview is terrestrial so is picked up via an aerial. Freesat is satelite, so you need a dish. There are more channels on Freesat than freeview, but they are NOT the same channels. on freeview you get stuff like dave and ther UKTV stations, among others. On freesat you get the Zone brand of channels, some more news ones, and more shopping. Freesat has HD already, so you can watch BBCHD and ITV HD (but you need a HD box to get this, they do normal ones too).
the main advantage of freesat is coverage, as terrestrial is affected by geography not everywhere will get it (not that this will stop the gov’t turning off analogue!) so freesat is only not availble to people who cant put a satelite up pointing to the sky in the right direction (maybe because of a large buildingor mountain). if you check out their respective sites you can see a full list of channels.
it should also be noted, for ease of use, that freeviews channels are numbered 1,2,3 etc, whereas freesat is numbered 101,102,103. (we bought freesat for my granmother due to geography, but as she is partially sighted we checked the channel numbers, but they lied to us)
another thing to note is the potential availability of iplayer, they will soon be putting it onto HD boxes and then later next yr all boxes should get it.
the other major difference is of course the price, it costs around £80 to get a satelite dish installed, plus £50 for a basic box, whereas freeview boxes start at about £15.

can i use an old sky dish to receive freesat in HD ?

I know i need a HD freesat box and to use new digital co-ax but is there anything different with the old sky dishes and the new dishes online, or is it just all about the box ? My friend has a dish on front of his house and as he no longer has sky said i could take it down and use it if i want ! need u guys to give me the low down before i possibly waste my time.

Yes an old dish would be fine. Any RG6 or CT100 will be fine. Don’t really need "digital" cable.

If it’s a really old dish (the old analogue, 60cm type), you may need a new LNB as the oldest ones are not "enhanced"

The position is also different from the old position at 19.2 degrees East. You need to be pointing at 28.2 degrees east. Lets hope you have "line of sight" or you may need specialist mounting to get the dish high enough. Just look at a neighbours.

Regardless of this, you really need to be looking at a twin or quad LNB, running lengths of twin "shotgun" cable.

You need 2 inputs to a satellite box to be able to record another program whilst watching another and for dual recording.

Im getting a sky plus box and Im going to use it for freesat but I was wondering if Id be able to record, pause, rewind etc with it?

No you wont that comes with the sky+ subscription.

Sky is coming to install sky HD. Would they install a freesat box for free aswell?

They are coming to replace the digibox with a hd box. Would they be able to install a freesat box in a different room for free and put the digbox that the HD ox is relacing in a different room and install it for free aswell?

I suppose it’s possible. The installer won’t be getting paid for the extra time he’s putting into this extra installation, but if you gave him some money he may do it. I wouldn’t bet on it though.

How do I get freesat upstairs?

I have sky tv downstairs (with a satellite dish installed) and want to get the free channels on the upstairs tv. How do I go about it? Will I need a freesat box and a some cables?

You have a few options

Cheapest way is to run a RF cable from RF2 socket on Sky box to the upstairs TV. This will let you view whatever channel the Sky box is on. A magic eye will let you change channels from upstairs

If you get hold of another Sky box and phone Sky to send a Freesat from Sky Card which costs £20 you can then change the LNB on the dish to a quad LNB which will give you extra signal output from the dish then run a RF cable from the dish to the upstairs box. Sky will charge £60 to get them to do it

A Freesat box will cost about £60 but again will need the LNB upgrading but is subscription-free
